Crazy benzos

Was in the er detox for alcohol for 4 days. I was told i can't take the 50mg of librium i was on for 6yrs for panic attacks and was prescribed phenobarbital. I didn't think to much about it at the time. Mmm yea as soon as i got out of detox and i was driving home, i must of had 10 panic attacks. Spent the next 4 days in hell. That's when i decided to do sum research on the librium and the world of benzos. As you can imagine going through benzo withdrawl and reading all about the affects it has on you, surley made things 10X worse. I lost about 15lbs and chained smoke for 4days. There was no way i was going to go through this, so after 6 days off benzos i went back on 50mg librium daily. I have read so much about

benzos after not being on them and the withdrawls and the affects it has on you. Crazy

Hi lib50mg, and welcome to the forum.  Yes, benzo withdrawal can be very severe for a lot of people, though it's not that way for everyone.  Even so, it's not a good idea to stay on benzos for years and years, due to the fact that many users eventually reach tolerance and have to increase their dose to get the same effect as before.  This can happen multiple times, so it's a good idea to get off sooner rather than later.  Here are a few links you'll find useful:

Withdrawal Support (during your taper).

The Ashton Manual is an authoritative source on what to expect in withdrawal and recovery.  Dr. Ashton is an expert in the field.  She describes and explains withdrawal symptoms, and there is also a section with withdrawal/taper schedules.

Please take the time to Create a Signature.  This will allow others to see where you are in the process so they can better support you.

Again, welcome!

Hello lib50mg,

Welcome to the form from me too  :)

I'm so sorry to hear about the detox experience, I can only imagine what a horrible experience that was for you and I can completely understand why you felt the need to reinstate the librium.

A cold turkey from benzos after long term use is never a good idea and some nasty symptoms can develop as sadly you experienced for yourself. However, please dont let that experience deter you from withdrawing from the librium because should you decide to carry out a slow, careful taper which is what we advise here your experience should be very different and if you do have some symptoms they should remain very manageable. As Megan said it isn't a good idea to take benzos long term, many adverse side effects can and do take place with long term use.

I'm glad you found us and I wish you well.

Debbie

Hello lib50 mg,

I feel your pain!

I was on kolonopin for 3 yrs and was having tolerance withdrawal and didn't no it. I turned to alcohol in an attempt to self medicate. Iv been in the ER on several occasions. I finally figured out what was happening thru research, and told the drs what I was going through and they refused to listen and cut me off the meds. I too, had to reinstate and now very slowly tapering.

Hang in there! You can do this  :)
