Son of a Benzofighter

Good Evening everyone,

I am writing this account on behalf of my mother.

She has been fighting to get off of Ativan for the last 2 months. She began taking Ativan to help her fight off occupation-caused vertigo, and then 4 months later, she found herself dependent on 1.50mg Ativan (aka Lorazepam) a day.

Over the last two months, we have been able to withdraw down to 0.43 mg Ativan a day. The journey has been very unpleasant (she has complained of tightness of the head, feelings like her head will explode, lethargy, dizziness, heart palpitations, among many other symptoms).

However, we have many challenges now, and I would love to talk to other people and get their opinions on how to help my mother.

Hi Benzofighter  :) Welcome to BenzoBuddies!

I am so happy you found us. Unfortunately it don't take long, as your mother knows, to develop a dependency to benzodiazepines. Ativan is particularly a potent "benzo" and its short half life makes it difficult to withdraw from. Sometimes valium is used as a cross over because of its longer half life.

You might like to check out The Ashton Manual it is an authoritative source on what to expect in withdrawal and recovery.  Dr. Ashton is an expert in the field.  She describes and explains withdrawal symptoms.

Please feel free to post to any of the dedicated boards, we have a wonderful community of people here, who will give sound advice. Members have been through all aspects of benzodiazepine use and withdrawal and are more than willing to share their experiences.
