Xanax user

Hi Everybody!

Reason for joining this site is that I used Xanax on a need basis July 2014 then my psych put me on Paxil 20mg

And told me to take Xanax .5 mg mornings and evenings which I did for a month then after4 weeks he said to take risperdol morning and the Xanax .5 mg evenings then I tapered one month off the Xanax but as psych advice on a

Absolute need basis...which is for me once a week or once every 2 weeks...

I think I need to wean better off the Xanax

Thanks

Hi Benzobuddy

Welcome to benzobuddies,  we are glad you found us. How long altogether have you been taking Xanax?. You might have come off too quick first time.  So what your saying is! you tapered off the Xanax after a few months but now use it once or twice a week!  We usually recommend to those that have been taking a rather erratic dose to stabilise at a set daily dose with which they feel reasonably comfortable, before starting their taper

A very good resource about these medications is the Ashton Manual, written by an expert in the field.  Here is a link to the manual: Professor Ashtons Manual  the rule of thumb is to taper slowly by making cuts of between 5-10% every 10-14 days. However, those taking benzodiazepines for a few weeks might like to attempt a taper that is quicker than this

Hi Benzobuddy,

Benzos (Xanax) are serious buisness , like Magrita has explained a sensible taper

is the right way to come off.

here is an explaination how these meds affect our brain , it will make it easier

Ni Magrita and thanks for the warm welcome wishes!

I have as my signature states only used Xanax .5mg for only on a needs basis for a month when I first started. Out roughly 3 times a month back in June 2013  then my psych got me on Paxil and said to

Take .5 Xanax morning and evenings for about 3 weeks then he gave me risperdol for the mornings and said .5 Xanax evenings for about 2 weeks then I should discontinue Xanax

I took the rrisperdol only for a few days as I got restless and irritable fidgety on it...

Then tapered off the Xanax until it was just a crumb.....

...but then after 2 weeks off was having withdrawl symptoms which I thought at first was paxil

Side affects but after taking less than .5 mg Xanax.  I was good to go for. 2 weeks then the same thing

And my brother in law who is a surgeon said I can still take the Xanax so I did and felt better

So I think my tapering method is taking a little bit in ever bigger intervals...

And my psychiatrist said I should take it only in real emergency situations

Which is what I do....and soon want to start with my paxil tapering and I m registered

At www.paxilprogress.org

Am I doing the right thing??

Thanks for your advice!

  • 1 year later...
I beat a Kolonipin addiction awhile back.... Well it wasn't an addiction but I was on them daily..... Now I'm perscribed Xanax 1mg PRN 2x a day.... I rarely take half a pill.... So for instance I went 11 days without a panic attack then had one last night and took a rescue dose.. I don't see anything wrong with taking it if you need it.... But thats just me.... Def try to stick away from using daily use... Thats where it will get you..
