Very Important Question-in hospital

[Me...]

Recommended Posts

I finished a two year long taper over a year ago. I have developed very serious akathisia from antipsychotics. They offered me benzos to calm down but I'm scared to take them.  Will it send me back into withdrawal if I take them.  Right now I'm very suicidal because of the agitation.

PLEASE do not take another benzo! You have come so very far, this will just set you back Meth! You Will most likely have to endure another long taper too, it is not the answer! Akathasia is awful but will leave in time as will all symptoms the farther away from drugs you get. I know someone who had awful akathasia and it completely left at 26 months off and he is doing great! You can do this!

It is good you are in a hospital if you need to feel safe, but please don't take a benzo, it's just not worth it.

Praying for you,

Meth I am SO sorry this is happening to you. I know how you suffered. You don't deserve this. And Im glad you're in a safe place.

If I were in your shoes, I would try not to go back on benzos. I never want to go though what I went through for almost two years.

Please stay the course.....and keep writing.

Hey man I know where you are coming from and one year is a long time to be sick but it is still early for some of us. Gotta have faith that things will get better, cause they will.

As far as taking another benzo goes.....you have to do what you have to do to survive but please consider this decision very carefully. I personally won't touch another psych drug but I'm not in your shoes. Just make sure you make an informed decision cause these are powerful drugs and you already know what they can do.

Taking a benzo could potentially send you back to square one  :-\ perhaps a beta blocker might be mildly helpful. When I had that symptom I walked A LOT and that helped.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with the anti psychotic taper now after your benzo taper. I know it's been such a long haul for you.

Can you slow down the antipsychotic taper? Perhaps it's too soon after the benzo taper. I know the Bristol tranquiliser project suggests waiting two years after your benzo taper to taper any other drugs.

I hope you find some relief without having to take a benzo.

Thx guys.  It's just so bad.  It dose not even compair to what I went through with benzos, and that's saying a lot. I don't know what to do.  I have to rapid taper off the seroquel because of the akathisia.  Hopefully that helps.

You've endured so much, this is your last battle. After this you are off all medications and you will heal.

Are you sure you are developing akasthasia from the drug or because you've tapered it so quickly? It seems like you went from 500 to 250 pretty quickly. Did the akasthasia get worse as you tapered more?

Shit Meth, so sorry to read this. If there is any way you can endure and grit out that last 250 it would be best for your body. Do you get to stay at the hospital for awhile longer? I had some leftover gabapentin when I was in acute and took a little dab twice and found a little relief from that for my intense anxiety.

I don't know what you should do but this looks like your final hurdle to a wonderful life that lies ahead my friend. You are one of the strongest people I've ever met on BB and if anybody can make it through this it's you. Please keep us updated on how you're doing. I will say a prayer for you and keep you in my thoughts, really pulling for you buddy!  :smitten:

Someone in one of my FB benzo groups recently tapered fairly rapidly from around 800mg of Seroquel.  He was mentally tortured day in and day out and seems to be better now that he's off of it.  He's a member here as well.  Name is Omicros... you may want to PM him if you want, he doesn't log on very often.

About the akathisia, have the doctors discussed attempting to treat it like Restless Legs Syndrome, which is now treated with Parkinson's medications?  The medications for RLS don't create dependencies and are quite effective ... not a cure, just to treat the symptoms of restlessness.  Parkinson's patients can be prescribed up to 24mg daily of Requip safely and Requip is not addictive.

If it were me, I'd most certainly give RLS meds a shot before I'd consider taking a benzo again.  In fact, yesterday I was in the ER for a kidney stone...whimpering and whining with pain but managed to say... 'Noooooooo benzooooooos....nooooo.'  They looked at me like I was  :idiot: .

I hope that as you taper off the Seroquel that the akathisia lessens dramatically and finally stops altogether. I was reading that it can cause terrible akathisia. Good luck to you!

Metheral....ask for therpuetic dose of benadryl or phenagren ...these are used in hospital for patients who can not take benzos. Propranolol is also used for anxiety and panic in hospital for patients who can not or refuse to take benzos. So very sorry this is happening to you. You have too much invested to not at least request other drugs first....my thoughts are with you....coop

I see this all the time, people quit one psychotropic only to keep taking an ad thinking it will help and its just as bad as benzos dulling and dumbing your emotions with the same long WD or syndromes.. Psychotropics are bad period. So sorry buddy..just ake it slow..hope you beat this.

Thx for all the support.  This has been pure hell.  It's probably good I'm here I'm very suicidal.  I see the dr tmr.  I'm gonna ask for something to take the edge off.  I just can't take this anymore.  I need to get off the seroquel.  I also take zuprexa, valproate acid, Effexor, and triazadone.  It wayyyy too many.  I was doing better on less. All those drugs has to be causing my akathisia.

Metheral, what are you s/x's of akathisia?  Pacing around?  Jerking of limbs?  Just wondering.  I take a small bit of Seroquel for sleep, only a small sliver of a 25mg. tab.

There's a medication they can give you besides benzos.  I forgot what it's called.  I'm so sorry my memory is shot from the Ativan.  I was in the hospital and I had the same thing happen to me and they gave it to me.

I would ask for a second opinion from a different doctor to get the right medication.  They use it all the time when antipsychotics make you restless and pace the floor.  Hold on don't take a benzo, please if you can.

God bless you and keep you healthy,

Deborah

The drug you need is Cogentin!  Ask for that.  That is what their supposed to use its not a benzo.  It's used to treat the involuntary movements caused by the antipsychotic.

Cogentin has its own serious side effects. Maybe Meth  doesn't want to add yet another drug to the mix he already is taking.

How are you doing today Meth?

Was on the same cocktail of drugs and more that you are now. Had the same symptoms as you and many other symptoms. Worse while in w/d and during recovery. Stopped all drugs and the relentless akathisia has finally gone. It took a long time. It was worth the wait. You posted that you were better when taking fewer drugs. Listen to your inner voice.
