Anyone else hyperthyroid?

I became hyperthyroid 18 months ago and my sleep went out the window. At the same time I became very sensitive to anti-depressant medication that had helped me sleep for many years. Had to stop taking them as they wipe me out even at a really low dose. Can't tolerate other sleep aids either and no joy with anything natural. I take anti-thyroid medication but my sleep is still very poor. I have been benzo free for 3.5 months. Have chronic pain as well, benzos made this worse and lack of sleep doesn't help. I havn't really had a life for over a year. I am married and most of the time manage to keep house - shopping, cooking cleaning but soon as I try to do anything more ambitious I fall over and have to cancel and then I beat myself up. I kinda wish for the old days when I could tolerate medication that helped me sleep (not benzos though). Has anyone else struggled  since becoming hyper-thyroid?

Hey there kimdb!  I have had Graves disease (hyperthyroidism) since January of this year.  I am not taking any anti-thyroid medication.  With the help of a Functional Medicine doctor, I am trying to manage my symptoms with diet, herbs, and supplements.  In the beginning I had a lot of trouble sleeping, but I sleep well most nights now.  The herbs that I have taken that help with sleep include valerian, Nerve Sedative tincture, and Kanna .  I have also used Fidnemed Nighttime Tea.  Kanna is an herbal anti-depressant; its effects are often compared to a natural SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor).  Since your anti-depressant medication helped you sleep, Kanna might just be the thing for you!  Here's a thread with several different people's experiences with Kanna in case you are interested: http://www.benzobuddies.org/forum/index.php?topic=104959.0

Of course, be sure and check if these things are safe to take with your medication before trying any of them.

PD

I have a question. Did the diagnosis of hyperthyroid come because you have low TSH? I am hypothyroid but I have all the hyper symptoms though I think that is withdrawal because my TSH is still above normal.

Stupid question here. I take levothyroxine for a thyroid condition which I never had before benzos. But I stupidly forgot to ask my doc whether it was low thyroid or excessive thyroid. Does any one here have a clue about this? I suspect once I am healed my thyroid problem will go away. Thanks in advance. Bets

Levothyroxine is thyroid hormone, so that means your Thyroid is low (hypothyroid). Usually people stay on indefinitely.
