Hair Loss, how long out did it happen in W/D, and how long till it came back?

I was losing hair in tolerance W/D the last year, now it's really coming out.  It seems to be growing fast, and coming back in, but not a fun issue.  How long out from W/D did your hair start falling out, and what month did it start to thicken back up?

I have zits constantly on my face, I know it's the Benzos coming out of my system.  I also have had red spots on my scalp for about a year.  When I'm flaring in a wave it's worse, usually at nite, then red spots are gone early a.m.  Just another SX I know, but want to know how you all fared with hair loss.  Thanks for any responses.

I relate to this. I've had terrible hair loss during the last six months. I think it's starting to slow down a bit. I hope so or I will end up having to wear a wig!!

I've had skin issues too. I've hard hard, flaky skin on my face, ears and eyelids. I've also had a really flaky scalp.

Fun times.

Chaffin, I have all the same, leather face & eyelids, it's horrid!  Dandruff on scalp.  If hair loss continues, I will shave my head and wear a scarf.  My ex sil had to wear a scarf, she lost her hair for no known reason.  She looked good in it, like a pirate, lol.  I don't have that nice a head, probably would look like an idiot!

So you have had hair loss the whole 6 months?  Mine didn't start till about a month ago.  I went off opiates in May, the Klono June 14.

Actually, thinking about it, it didn't start straight away. I can't remember exactly when it started but it was after I went into acute withdrawal. So it didn't go on for six months.

My hands have aged too and I've got hairs on them that I didn't have before! Luckily they are quite downy but I don't want hairy hands!!

I'm sure your hair will grow back.

Stupid drugs!

Hi, many members have reported temporary hair loss.  Mine became evident at about 6 months off, and I was very disturbed by it. I even started looking at wig catalogs.  However, by 9-10 months off it had begun to grow back, and it eventually returned to normal.  It does grow back!

thanks ladies!  So do you think me losing my hair this early out, 70 days is a good sign?  maybe I'm healing faster?  It is growing back on hair line.

Yes, the hairline is where I noticed the regrowth first!

Yep, mine got really thin during rapid taper and worse right after c/t. It took about 2-1/2 months of being off for it to start thickening back to pre-benzo state. I'm a 40 yo male though, so my hair was already thinning a bit. This poison just has so many gifts to give. Wish there were positive side effects to some of this stuff, but that's just wishful thinking.

 Megan, excellent!  It's really getting long on hairline in front, growing way fast too, so glad to hear that means I'm burning on through this fast, and will heal faster most likely.  I'm over the brain stuff, just occasional anxiety, and horrid muscle cramps here and there, weakness and tinnitus.  Once cramps are gone, I'm good to go!  I'm 82 days out today. ;D

My hair is still falling out, but I'm ok with it, no thinner than it's gotten during tolerance W/D when I was losing it.  I think the whole body has to renew itself!  So if this crap comes out of every pore as it is on me, makes sense the scalp/hair has to regenerate to get rid of it also.

Hugs, MG  :smitten:

I C/T also, first from opiates, took a month, then Klono, and no idea what was about to hit me.   I lost none during opiate W/D and that was as bad as Benzo W/D in it's own different way.  I'm lucky I didn't lose it all going through two different W/D!!

  • 1 month later...
[f7...]

I wanted to bump this thread up to give others hope.  My hair got very, very thin on top and top 1/3 of sides.  Now it's coming back in rapidly, especially the last couple weeks, it no longer looks thin on top.  I'm losing less in shower and sink when I comb it out.  I'm at 4 months 9 days out Klono C/T.

I'm taking hair & skin vitamins.  Also, my scalp is still red while flaring (usually at nite), and skin still dry and feels like oily leather, but the extreme acne has slowed down from about 15 zits a day to 1 a day.  NO more of those things on legs, arms, torso!  That's major, I had them constantly all over body during tolerance W/D for a couple years on through C/T!  Still have dandruff, but it's eased up.

One thing different I'm doing is washing my hair every other day.  It's made a difference.  K made my hair so dry and brittle.  I'm Italian, and have oily skin, but right now it's dry.

So for anyone losing hair, don't worry!  It will come back.  My extreme loss to time it started growing back was less than a couple months.  Extreme skin issues, 3 months or so till improvement.

Oh, wow, MG, I'm so glad you bumped this thread. I didn't know hair loss was a benzo "thing". I've been freaking out the past couple of months because my hair has gotten so thin that I thought I was looking at wig shopping, too!  :o

Really, it grows back?  :yippee:

I can't even put into words how upset I've been about this. And the skin, too, only mine is like a reptile. :( Really, it is so dry and thick ... it seems almost impossible that it could ever possibly reverse.

I wish there was more information out there about withdrawing from death poison then maybe I wouldn't have to think that it's only me all of the time.

Anyway, I'm so glad that you're hair is growing back and your skin is clearing up. That is wonderful news to hear! If the same happens for me I'll be sure to update this thread.

When I started my opiate C/T, my eyes wrinkled up like I was 20 yrs older, FREAKY!  That cleared up thankfully.  I have dark circles from K W/D, but they say most of the aging stuff clears up.  I hope so!  Yes my skin is like a snakes too,   I started taking Hair & Skin vitamins and see a big difference the last couple weeks.

I had the hair loss off and on for years, was on these poison pills 9 yrs total.  My hair is fine, but it got so brittle, then I thought I had folliculitis, it was red around each follicle, freaked me out!  I got huge sores on scalp with blood in them.  It was awful :(  That's when I knew I had to get off these pills, and get healthy.  I tried pine tar shampoo, all kinds of oils, supplements, etc. It would come back, thicken up, then would shed and be worse next time.

I stopped washing it everyday, just makes it shed more, and the oils are good for it anyway.  I'm a wash everything, everday kind of gal, but it seems to be helping also.  I also try to get more oils, like olive oil, coconut oil in body, and eat fats like whole milk, butter, eggs etc.  I got to where my skin was so dry I literally could not suds up my skin

Glad I could give you hope

Symptoms got the worst for me at the 2 year mark of taking the drug lorazepam. I had every weird symptom from depressed lungs to flu feelings that no doctor understood. Finally my hair started falling out in early Sept this year. That is when I started not being able to finish a sentence. My brain was fading fast. So since c/t my hair has been growing in thick and curly in only six weeks. Really hope it doesn't fall out again. Oh, the brain's improving too. I hope it is curly and not smooth.

Nesh, oh my, I read your sig line.  :'(  My heart goes out to you sister.  You have been through the ringer.  So glad your hair is coming in beautifully and you are doing better overall.  Yours is quite the testimony for Benzo W/D.  Hugs & much love, MG :smitten::hug::highfive:

My hair was like straight straw after a year on lorazepam instead of curly. A good tip I just saw on Dr. Oz seems to help the texture. He says to rinse off the crème rinse with cool water not hot as I have always done. If you use hot water more rinses out. If you use cool water, more stays on your hair to soften it. Guess what? He is right. He also said let the crème rinse stay on your head until the end of shower. Just do the hair in cool water. Try it!

I started doing this during the summer because I was so miserably hot anyway.  I've known this for years.  It helps close the pores also, helping protect the follicle.

I had this bad for months then it grew back. Now it is falling out again! Really bothers me too.

Cool, we are still not far out from W/D.  Shedding is normal, is it coming out in handfuls?  I actually count mine when I come after shower.  It's longer, so easier to count.  I was losing 30-40 just combing it when I was losing a lot.  Now it's like 8-15.  I know it's OCD to count, but our hair is important to us.  I could tell it was messed up, it would come right out.  Normally combing the hair doesn't come out that easily.  I use a leave in conditioner also, so I'm not pulling on hair while combing.  I started taking a good skin, hair and nail supplement.  They are pretty cheap on Amazon.  It's helped quite a bit.

My hair is short and I don't really notice it anywhere. I look on my pillow and see very little and nothing in the drain or hair brush. It will just thicken up and then one day I touch my head and it's thin and receding. I use Hugo shampoo and conditioner cause it's supposed to be all natural. I even used to use another all natural shampoo with ketoconazole in it but it didn't help, in fact I think it made it worse! I have tried using coconut oil, peppermint oil and vinegar (as a rinse) but no hair growth just shiny soft hair.

Neem oil with a carrier oil is really good massaged into scalp before a shower.  I did that for months, just have too many other things to do now, I hate being high maintenance   It helps strength hair and follicles, and it will get rid of dandruff (maybe not in WD tho), eczema and psoriasis.
