Tapering Xanax XR can be done, but it must be done just as carefully as regular Xanax in my opinion.  I would use a combination of both regular short acting Xanax along with the XR, so that I could make very small dosage reductions.  Xanax is extremely potent and it is not possible to make the small reductions with the .50mg XR tabs.  This is why the .25mg regular Xanax is usually used to help taper down.  They can be quartered to make small dose reductions.  The small reductions can be very helpful in making this process more tolerable.

 

We generally suggest that cuts/dosage reductions be made in the 5-10% range, every 10 to 14 days.  Good luck with your spouses taper. You're wonderful to help them.  Thank you.
