Personality Change

Hello everyone-

Does anyone feel that their personality changed after being on a benzo? I feel very numb and can express no emotion. I was wondering if this is just depression or a symptom from the recovery process.

The numbness you describe is pretty common.  It will pass in time.  I think we do it (deliberately or accidentally) to avoid stress which revs up our symptoms.  As your healing progresses, you'll take more chances, do more things, and your quality of life will slowly increase.  I'm 8 months out, and stlll feel a little bit 'numb', but am probably around 80% of the way back to my old ornery self.

I had it. It was horrible, I had so many symptoms but that was the one I hated the most. It started to shift in month 5 and by month 6 it was gone. Hope it goes for you soon.  :smitten:

I had this very badly. It has lifted a lot over time, though, because I don't have as much head pressure as I did before. The worse the head pressure was, the worse it would be.

I am emotionally numb as well. Not crying over situations that I would normally cry about; can't feel love for people like I used to. Don't know how to go on like this.

As others said here, it does pass like all the rest of the symptoms.  It's scary when you're 'in' it because it feels like it's never going to change but it will.

How long did it take people to start feeling emotions again? I also have a very flat voice and often feel out of breath when I am talking. It is like I have become mute or a hermit. I once was vibrant and full of energy before taking a Benzo and now any type of social interaction is a struggle for me. I have been described as catatonic and reserved. This makes it hard to do any type of job or be in any social atmosphere because nobody wants to hire somebody that has no personality. . This is starting to sadden me because I feel like I have completely lost my self and have no quality of life. I am lonely and feel like a statue that watches the world from an outside view.

Any kind words would help

Polydactyl- I agree. This is by far the worst symptom I have experienced.

Does anyone else feel like they can't talk? I struggle so badly with small talk now and it is like I have forgotten speech. I became socially awkward and silent through this..Is there anything I can do to get this back??

Well I got off benzos because I had no emotions while taking them. Once I jumped it got 100x worse and it has been a year now and still no let up. I hope it doesn't last much longer.

Many people have told me to just give it time. I don't know if there is a point to carry on like this.

I felt that way too, but there is a point because it will go away, and you will have your self back again. I didn't believe it either, but it happened for me and it will happen for you too.
