Long term prednisone side effects/Anxiety/Depression/feeling emotionally numb.

 

I’ve Been on prednisone for the last 7 years due to SLE Lupus but for the last year and a half I have been taking 40 mg's due to flairs  than dropped down to 35 then to 30 MG’s a day  when I tried to cut it down to 25 MG’s all hell broke loose I think my adrenal Gland stopped producing steroids and now am stock at thirty but it has some really nasty side effects like High Anxiety depression/sweets/mood swings/feeling cold empty scared emotionally numb  among many other things can anyone relate?

Hi Watchman,

Indeed it is very difficult to "go off" oral steroids. It can be done but it takes a lot of patience and a long time to go through the withdrawal which can be just as bad as benzo withdrawal. It is probably safer to go through benzo withdrawal first and find some form of stability after that, and then attempt to taper down from prednisone very slowly, and under competent medical supervision.

 

When was your last benzo or any other medication except prednisone?

 

In the long run there may be better options to heal lupus without toxic medications.

I have been on prednisone since I was 17 due to Addisons disease. Im in my 30's now coming off of Klonopin. Addisons is where your adrenal gland doesnt produce enough cortisol so you have to take it manually. Coming off benzos also messes with your cortisol. Everything has been way crazy for me in this process. I feel numb to alot and no emotions whatsoever. My advice would be to get through the benxo wd first because prednisone can mess your head up and Im betting coming off both would have you a mess.
